About our Founder

Jean Renée DeTar has been practicing and teaching yoga since 1973. She still studies under her very first Iyengar teacher, Bobbi Goldin and spent over 24 years studying under Aadil Palkhivala with Bryan Legere. She completed Structural Yoga Therapy training with Mukunda Stiles, and was initiated in the Himalayan Tradition, under the tutelage of Pandit Rajmani Tigunait and Dr. Rolf Sovik. She was trained in the use of herbs and kinesiology with Hanna Kroeger, and as a medical intuitive in the early 90's with Dr. Norm Shealy. Renée has deeply ingrained the work of Caroline Myss into the foundational coursework of the Institute of Interdisciplinary Yoga Studies. She feels that Caroline's work best explains the various models of the mind provided by the yoga philosophies that are studied in the Institute of Interdisciplinary Yoga Studies program. She respects Dr. Ray Long, MD, author of the BandhaYoga books, and brings in him annually for a fresh look at what is happening in traditional medicine. She is completing her Ayurveda studies with Kathryn Templeton and Dr. Vasant Lad. Renee is committed to helping her yoga tribe stay intact in Kansas City area and the midwest, by networking and collaborating with local yoga studio owners, so that traditional yoga classes are not wiped out by large corporate yoga companies. She founded the Institute of Interdisciplinary Yoga Studies in 2001 that was the first liberal arts yoga school in the Midwest. She had overwhelming support for her efforts by bringing on as faculty, some of the most famous yoga teachers in the world: Rod Stryker, Erich Schiffmann, Aadil Palkhivala, Mukunda Stiles, Shiva Rea, Judith Lasater, David Williams, Doug Swenson, Bobbi Goldin, Liz Lark, Tiffany Cruikshank, Ray Long, MD, Ricky Tran, Doug Keller, Seane Corn, and Jodi Blumstein. She was hired by the Life Centre in Notting Hill, London, UK to create a similar interdisciplinary yoga school program that included mentorship. This program is now known as YogaCampus.org in the United Kingdom. Her current focus is on the KC Yoga Therapy curriculum, that is one of the few schools for yoga teachers that incorporates the sister sciences of Ayurveda and Yoga.

Renée holds her Bachelor's in Communicative Disorders & Sciences, and a Master's in Liberal Studies, with a published thesis in the neurological development of the premature infant and the first breath.
